Developmental Editing

This service focuses on the big picture. I’ll take a look at pacing, character, plot, flow, consistency, and some stylistic elements. A Developmental Edit considers all the aspects of a manuscript that make a book enjoyable. From this read, I’ll provide an edit letter, a chapter-by-chapter outline, inline comments, and 30-days of manuscript support.

Manuscript Critique

This service focuses on larger parts of a story. I’ll read through once to assess specific things like pacing, character, plot, flow, consistency, and some stylistic elements. A Manuscript Critique is only a single read and a simplified edit letter emailed to your inbox. This is different from a Developmental Edit which provides comprehensive feedback on multiple areas of a manuscript.

Developmental Lite

Option Lite includes one read and the feedback emailed to your inbox. This option is great for self-starters looking for feedback, but who would like to implement that feedback on their own.

Developmental Intensive

This option is more hands-on, including one full pass and a partial pass. I will read through your story once and provide feedback. Then we have up to four hour-long video meets to make a revision plan and implement the changes together. You can ask any questions regarding your story, and I will help to brainstorm any changes with you. While these changes are being implemented, I will reread any specific areas that may require more in-depth revision. This is a collaborative effort that will have your story shining.

Line & Copy Editing

This service is two passes of the manuscript. I’ll read line-by-line for word choice, phrasing, clarity, and sentence structure. This edit will make the prose sing and enhance the established voice. My focus here is understandability. I will then send the book back to you for review.

Next, I will read for grammar, syntax, spelling, and all those little technical elements that really have a manuscript shining for publication. (Offered with or without formatting for typesetter.)

I’ll provide a basic edit letter outlining strengths and common errors and the manuscript as a Word doc with edits marked by Track Changes. I will also offer 30 days of manuscript support.

Developmental, Line & Copy Editing

This service provides three passes of the manuscript. One read for the Developmental Edit, one read for the Line Edit, and one for the Copy Edit. In addition, up to five hour-long video calls are available for brainstorming and discussion to help implement changes.

The first read will address big-picture items as listed above. I'll provide an edit letter, a chapter-by-chapter outline, and inline comments. We will meet to make a revision plan, implement changes, and brainstorm any ideas that come up during the process.

Once the developmental stage is complete, I’ll read for line edits. I'll provide a new edit letter and the Word doc with Track Changes. Lastly, once changes have been implemented, I'll read for the copy edits.

Query Edit

The Query Edit includes two revisions. I will provide a letter outlining the viability of the project and any suggested revisions, and a Word doc with Track Changes for grammar, sentence structure, and clarity. Once the initial edits have been made, I will read and provide line-by-line feedback a second time.

Synopsis Edit

The Synopsis Edit offers two revisions and an optional 30-minute video call to discuss the overall story. Line edits will be provided via Word with Track Changes. An edit letter will also be sent regarding general thoughts on the flow of the story and the overall structure.

I offer a variety of other services for self-publishing authors as well!

One of the best parts of traditional publishing is having a team of people behind you and your book (because who wants to burn themselves out doing everything and then not have anyone to celebrate with?). I aim to bridge that gap by providing a variety of services for authors to help simplify the process and offer support along the way.

From formatting to branding to project management, I'm in it with you for the long-haul (or as long as you'll have me!).

Why Work With Me?

At their core, stories help us connect with the world. So let's explore! My goal is to make your voice and your words sing in such a way that it tugs at readers' heartstrings. As a writer myself, I understand how detrimental bad feedback can be. I'm focused on helping you tell your story, not the story I want your book to be.

I tailor my feedback to an industry-based, character-driven perspective. My plot recommendations are directly correlated to character arcs. If you're an emotional storyteller, I'm right there with you.

But most of all, I love cheering authors on. Writing can be a lonely process, and I want to make sure you know how amazing your words are and that the world needs them. You are someone's favourite author. Together we can get that story into the hands of a reader that's been waiting for a book like yours.

It is possible. You can do it. I'd love to help.

Rain Sullivan

"Erin is phenomenal. She has a knack for seeing an author's desired trajectory for their project, shining a light on their story's strongest elements, and whittling away the bits and pieces that aren't serving the main arc all while encouraging and supporting the author to better under the mechanics of their story. I was nervous to work with an editor, nervous to take my overwritten manuscript, which I knew needed major cuts and revisions, to someone I didn't know or trust yet. On the verge of thinking my project was dead in the water, Erin brought it back to life and then some. She made the entire process comfortable, manageable, and exciting. I can confidently say I will be working with Erin again in the future. Oh, and did I mention? She got me to fall back in love with my story and, more importantly, my reason for telling it."

I acknowledge that I live and work on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee Peoples. I am thankful to those of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples who have--and continue to--care for these lands here and across the province. To this day, Indigenous people in this region and beyond continue to face oppression, inequality, and violence as a result of historic and ongoing colonialism. Though these lands are protected by the Dish with One Spoon agreement, settlers and institutions continue to fail to uphold their responsibilities. In order to change, we must understand the gruesome history and stand in allyship with Indigenous peoples through action.
